Come along to our intensive summer school where you will be introduced to portraiture techniques in clay, from observation using a life model. This course is a lovely way to get an introduction to figurative sculpture in an intensive, enjoyable way, or to refine the skills you already have over a solid week of practice Please note on this course you will be drawing or painting from a nude model.

This course is open to beginners or those with some experience of sculpture.
Days 1 & 2: Full body figure You will take time to consider the model and their pose, taking some quick sketches, before you begin working on a small scale figure. You will learn about the different sculpture tools to use, and how they make marks and create form. You will consider form, structure and negative space, guided and supported by your tutor. Days 3-5: Introduction to portrait heads. You will be introduced to portrait heads, and how to portray character. Your tutor will guide you through how to look for the structure of the skull, how to measure accurately, and you will begin creating your portrait head. You will learn how best to represent the eyes, how to consider hair as a form and its structure, how to texture with various tools, and how to analyse and refine your work.
